We previously hand-picked 8(!) single barrels to be released throughout 2022 and last month we had the opportunity to spend some time at the Koval Distillery while they were bottling the first 2 of our barrel picks.
We got to see the distilling process up-close and even got a chance to help bottle, and of course sample (for quality assurance purposes 😁) the first of Garfield’s Select Single Barrel releases for 2022. Trust us, you’re gonna want to try them!
Koval Bourbon #6462 Barrel #3
ABV: 55% 110 proof
NOSE: Complex with notes of caramel corn, bakers’ chocolate, honeysuckle, and malt. Adding water amplifies these aromas.
PALATE: Mid-level viscosity. Balanced between grain and barrel influence.
FINISH: Very long with a buzz that hangs around with an alluring sweetness. A touch of water makes the finish tamer but brings out rich barrel flavors.
OVERALL: This barrel is among the most interesting and rewarding four grain bourbons we’ve had in some time. That is likely due in part to its unique mash bill: 52% corn, 11% wheat, 22% malt and 15% rye. This selection will be appreciated by any whiskey lover. A highly memorable barrel indeed!

Koval 3 Grain #3923 Barrel #2
NOSE: Instantly detectable is the rye that dominates the mash bill (42%). Gradually a floral semi-botanical brilliance emanates from the glass. COMPLEX beyond belief. Notes of black licorice, clove and honey.
PALATE: Mid-level viscosity. Spice becomes intense immediately but doesn’t overwhelm the other notes. A few drops of water lessens the explosiveness yet allows the dram to retain all of its flavor.
FINISH: Very long, shifting between grain and barrel influence.
OVERALL: Wow! This selection boasts a truly one-of-a-kind mash bill: 42& rye, 33% oat, and 25% millet. Sweet yet woody, you’d never guess it’s 110 proof. Koval is doing some really interesting things lately and this barrel is solid proof that. Grab a bottle while you can!
